“Commemorations,” the 25th annual Sheldon Statewide traveling exhibition, is appearing in the Gallery Series at Chadron State College’s Memorial Hall this month.

Mary Donahue, a member of the CSC art faculty, said the Sheldon exhibit provides a powerful start to this year’s offerings of the annual Gallery Series, which is a combined effort between CSC’s Galaxy Series and its art department to feature artists from nearby and across the nation.

“Commemorations,” which consists of paintings, prints and photographs, is organized around the themes of holidays, historical events and public figures. It explores the commemorations as both a unifying and contentious force, and their role in cultural history.

The show will be on display in the Main Gallery through Sept. 26. Chadron State is the first of eight stops for the traveling exhibit, an outreach program of the Lincoln’s Sheldon Museum of Art, between now and June 2012.

While the Sheldon exhibit is on campus, a photography exhibit by Jason Jilg will be on display in Gallery 239 on the second floor of Memorial Hall.

Jilg, a native of Broken Bow, captures black and white images that are inspired by his international travels, love for rural living, the Great Plains and Nebraska.

The two shows open a series of 16 exhibits that will appear in Memorial Hall this academic year. The exhibits are open to the public free of charge from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. They also may be viewed by appointment by contacting 308-432-6066.
