Arboretum volunteers to create holiday swags

Volunteers of the Chadron State College Arboretum will take part in its winter seasonal project Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Sandoz Center from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will learn how to make holiday swags to decorate campus.

“This event caps off our 2012 season of simple do-it-yourself volunteer events,” said Lucinda Mays, public horticulturist for Chadron State.

The arboretum volunteers’ four events this year included simple seed care, in which volunteers learned how to store and package seeds for sale, sorted and cleaned seeds gathered from campus gardens last fall. The volunteers swapped seeds for the second consecutive year, and covered garden tool care and planting for the fall and spring.

“We welcome volunteers of all ages every time we get together. We learn a lot from each other and at this workshop we’ll celebrate the season and prepare evergreen swags for the campus. Bring your own ribbon for making one to take home,” Mays said.
